Here is the bride, all dressed in — black?

Today’s brides are no longer interested in wearing white on their big day.

While conventional wedding attire features elegant long, white dresses with veils and trains, this tradition is no longer in vogue.

A new trend that has blossomed for the modern bride is to don darker shades for dresses, such as black.

Google Trends has been heavily searched for “black wedding dress” over the past 12 months, CNN reported. In fall 2021 in particular, “black wedding dress” was searched for more times than “white wedding dress” on Google.

Wedding dress and formal wear mega-chain David’s Bridal is currently offering a selection of made-to-order versions of their popular dress styles in black.

Laura McKeever, senior director of brand public relations at David’s Bridal, told CNN that brides tend to go dark on the happiest day as a way to buck tradition.

“It’s by far our favorite trend and we love it. Black dresses are chic and dramatic,” she told CNN. “The concept of what is considered traditional has evolved.”

David’s Bridal has also seen an increase in demand for black wedding dresses.

McKeever noted that the pandemic has changed lifestyles and customs, explaining that “couples want to throw traditional marriage rules out the window.”

“Brides who had to postpone their wedding due to the pandemic now want their special day to be unique,” she added.

Weddings aren't usually a time to throw convention to the winds, but some brides do it with at least one nuptial centerpiece – the white wedding dress. Among the wedding trends that are heating up, sellers have noted a renewed interest in black wedding dresses. According to Google Trends, searches for
David’s Bridal has increased its selection of differently colored dresses by 30% this year, up from 10% in 2021.

“They want to wear what they want on their big day. They choose unique venues, they wear sneakers and have food trucks at their wedding,” McKeever said. She also revealed that David’s Bridal has increased its selection dresses of different colors by 30% this year, compared to 10% in 2021.

Other colors added to the paint palette include blue, champagne, purple, and red.

The tradition of wearing white robes to go to the altar dates back to the days of Queen Victoria. She wore the purity-like hue when she married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg, who was also her first cousin, in 1840. She popularized the white color style at the time and many other brides wanted follow suit in an effort to emulate their monarch’s tastes.

Victoria was just 20 when she got married and chose to choose a dress that would reflect her own innocence and chastity and show that she was fit to lead the UK.

Celebrities are also reviving the black dress style, setting trends for the rest of the gram-seeking public.

Sarah Jessica Parker wore a black dress for her wedding to Matthew Broderick in 1997, while “Selling Sunset” star Christine Quinn rocked a black tone for her 2020 ceremony.
