Energy Garden London energizes high-end clothing brand
Energy Garden London, a network of 27 community energy projects, will supply renewable electricity to two outlets of Patagonia, the upscale clothing brand selling repairable adventure clothing, starting next month.
The energy activist group has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to light and heat the clothing retailer’s stores in Bristol and Manchester. Both sides celebrate the deal as a UK first; no deal has ever pooled electricity from multiple community-run energy sites, they believe.
Based in Streatham, Energy Garden engages and trains inner city youth and other volunteers to generate clean energy using solar PV and wind power. With the blessing of Transport for London, London Overground and City Hall, the capital’s rail platforms, difficult infill terrains and other neglected sites are at the center of the group’s concerns.
Younity, Octopus Energy’s joint venture with Co-Op Energy focused on local and community clean energy, has completed the deal. It will meet 80 MW of demand each year.
Any energy from Energy Garden’s solar production remaining consumed by Patagonia’s two outlets will feed Co-op Energy’s community electricity tariff.
