Federation PJ Library celebrates 13 years in Houston
Over 300 children participated in the “Car-nival”, chaired by the multigenerational Kagan family, including Sharon and Arnold Kagan, Hydee and Ryan Kagan, Melanie and Dan Spelkin and Julie and Evan Davis.
The celebration in Congregation Beth Israel parking lot featured clowns, acrobats, carnival games, loot, sweet treats and music from EZ Bar Mitzvahs. HEB and Kagan Pediatrics were generous supporters.
Participants also donated three 55 gallon barrels of lightly used shoes and crampons and new socks to Sole Loved, giving hope to those in need by simply giving them a new pair of shoes.
“In Judaism, 13 years is a milestone, and like a bar or bar mitzvah, the PJ Library program has grown into its unique leadership role in the community over the past 13 years,” said Hilary Kamin, director of community engagement for the Federation. “The Car-Nival Mitzvah Book was such a fun way to celebrate this achievement with our community.”
PJ Library is a beloved international program, in partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, which provides free Jewish books by mail to families with children from birth to 12 years old. The books are sent monthly to children in the Houston area and range from Jewish holidays. to Jewish values to Jewish heroes.
Locally PJ Library serves over 1,800 children in 142 zip codes throughout the Greater Houston area. Since the program began in Houston, more than 6,500 children and 4,200 families have benefited.
The Book Mitzvah also initiated a tzedakah project to give a gift back to PJ Library to help ensure the legacy of this program for future generations. Donations are always accepted and each donation will be matched at 25% by a generous matching grant from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.
The PJ Library of Houston is generously supported by the Samuels Family Foundation and Nancy S. and Gary S. Glesby, Lauren Glesby Mahan and Tracy Glesby Northington, in honor of Veda Mae and Morris Glesby.
In addition to receiving free books from PJ Library, participating families are invited to a variety of programs throughout the year where they can meet and connect with other families and partner organizations. Families also receive a monthly email newsletter that includes parenting suggestions, blogs, family craft activities, and a calendar of upcoming events.
